5 Ways To Attack Your Day

Attack Your Day

Job performance is important, but it’s hard to do your best when you’re stressed by the number of tasks you have, or you’re dealing with distractions.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve your work performance and better tackle your day.

1. Healthy Work-Life Balance

Work-Life Balance

It can be challenging to attack each day with energy and vigor when you’re experiencing burnout. Oftentimes we bring our work home with us, whether it be checking work-related emails or finishing tasks at home. Work is important, but so is a healthy work-life balance.

Set boundaries and keep anything work-related at the office. Develop hobbies outside of work and spend time with friends and family. Focusing on things that make you happy in your free time will freshen your mind and drive you.

2. Avoid Drama and Gossip

While it’s important to get along with your coworkers and establish friendly relationships, too much chatter is distracting and can take you away from your tasks, affecting your productivity. If you have noticed that a conversation you and a coworker are having has gone on too long, you can politely suggest continuing it during lunch or after work.

Try to avoid drama; it’s surprisingly commonplace in offices. Not only can engaging in drama and gossip alter the way others look at you, but it can be damaging to office relationships.

3. Create a Schedule and Manage Tasks

Create a Schedule

At the beginning of your work day, put together a schedule you plan on sticking to for the day. Organize the tasks you need to complete and when you plan on doing them, as well as plan around any meetings you need to attend. Having an idea of what your day is going to look like allows you to take control and can help alleviate any stress or anxiety about work you may have.

Make sure to schedule a few breaks as well. You want to have time to relax, so you’re not feeling overworked or overwhelmed, and develop a way to better manage your tasks.

  • Batch Tasks: Some tasks can be batched together to save time. For example, checking your email; it’s a necessary task. Instead of repeatedly checking it and responding, set a schedule of what times you are going to check it, so all of the responses can be sent at the same time.
  • Prioritize Tasks: Often, we are assigned important, critical tasks that need to be prioritized. These tasks tend to be dull or more time-consuming, so we avoid them or put them off until the last possible minute. While this may be an effective method of working for some individuals, it can cause stress. The dread of having to complete the task alone can be a distraction, so it’s important to prioritize the completion of these tasks.
  • Finish Tasks: There are times in the day when you may lose focus on a task and decide to switch to another. Doing so, however, can disrupt your momentum and lead to a waste of time. If you’re losing focus, take a quick break or go on a short walk around your office and finish the task before starting another.
  • Delegate Tasks: For your own mental health, you have to realize when you’ve spread yourself thin amongst tasks. Having too many assignments to do can be stressful, so delegate tasks to coworkers if you can or speak to your boss about lessening your workload.

Creating a schedule for your workday and managing your assigned tasks more efficiently is one way you can attack your day.

4. Limit Distractions

While distractions may be fun and relaxing at home; at work, they can seriously impede your workload and output. There are many different distractions you can encounter at work; some of them are even at your desk.

The biggest distraction is your phone. The buzzes and smart chirps it emits are incredibly distracting, so unless you are expecting an important call, put it on silent or turn it off entirely and store it where you can’t see it. By minimizing the distractions around you, both you and your boss will see a boost in your productivity.
